having previously stayed in Bahia Akumal in mexico and thoroughly enjoyed i was expecting great things from the Esmerela Luxury as it should be on par or better than Akumal Luxury. In fairness in trems of the hotel, facilities, staff, food etc it was and we had a good holilday but with one issue that I found totally unfair. During our stay many guests in Esmerelda wore grey all inclusive bands (ours red) which was odd, on speaking to these people (all nice) they were staying in the Punta Cana hotel next door but had been given the grey passes (go anywhere bands inc Fantasia which we were not allowed to go to) due to either it seemed a mix up with TUI or due to ongoing building works. The upshot being that they paid arond 30% less than Esmerelda guests but got more than the guests who had paid for teh 'luxury' hotel. This meant that most of Punta Cana were in esmerelda bars (premium spirits were available unlike punta cana) and they were too busy, Breakfast buffet was utter chaos as clearly better food also served in Esmerelda and soem days would take 30 mins to be seated which results in many days just missing breakfast as was not relaxing. The punta cana guests were all nice people and i cant blame them for using Esmerda facilities a sthey were better but as an esmerelda guest i question why i paid the extra 30%. On return i contacted Bahia about this and was told the following about the grey bands 'these are repeat guests who have been with the chain more than ten times'. This is a blatent lie as i spoke to many of teh grey band people (all nice) and none of them had been to a Bahia hotel before. So be warned, it maybe worth paying 30% less to get more when wanting to stay at teh Esmerelda

We had a wonderful 14 night stay, the al a cartes especially Yurta & Naan were fantastic. A big thank you to Filipe in the lobby bar, Manuel Lopez our concierge in villa 94, Carlos in the Sports Bar, Stephanie at the pool bar & Waldy in the buffet & some of the al a cartes for helping to make our holiday extra special by going out of their way to be the friendliest & most helpful staff we’ve ever had in any of the 5 Bahia’s we’ve stayed at! ??
