One of the most populous cities in the world, when it comes to keeping busy the sprawling metropolis of Tokyo doesn’t disappoint.
5 things you’ll want to do
1 – Tsukiji Fish Market
About 400 shops line the streets selling some of the best and freshest sushi and seafood in the world, sweet treats, kitchen utensils and so much more. Grab your yen and go early – sushi for breakfast!
2 – Shibuya Crossing
The busiest pedestrian crossing in the world, moving as many as 3,000 people at a time is often featured in many movies and TV shows. Adjacent to the crossing is the statue of Hachikō, a Japanese Akita dog reminisced for loyalty to its owner.
3 – Tiny Bars
Escape the crowds in one of the many tiny bars you’ll find hidden along the small streets of Tokyo. Some have as few as four seats, with others maxing out at ten. Strike up a conversation with the locals or order some Japanese snacks cooked in a 10 square foot kitchen or less!
4 – Sensoji Temple
If the city feels too modern, make sure to stop at one of the most colourful and popular temples located in the Asakusa district of old Toyko – embrace serenity at Sensoji Temple completed in 645.
5 – Day trip to Mt. Fuji
Finally, take a day trip by bus or train to one of the world’s most famous mountains and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Enjoy the nearby towns and lakes, a truly unmissable landmark when you land in Japan. Check the weather before you go, clouds tend to hide the mountain, and this is a site you don’t want to miss.
Tokyo and the surrounding area lie in the humid subtropical climate zone with hot, hazy summers and mild to cool winters. September and October are the rainiest months of the year with the possibility of mild typhoons throughout.
The Tokyo Metro is the way to go with stops at nearly every must-visit spot. The map can be very daunting with multiple train lines, but signs are available in English, and mobile map applications help to take away the stress. Travellers making the most of their day can purchase a 24-hour pass or enter their destination and pay per kilometer travelled for each ride.
From Tokyo Bay take a water bus, an alien spaceship looking craft low to the water to bypass bridges while traveling along the river.
